“I Was Telling Him My Girlfriend Problems” — Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia Reveals Deep Bond With HC Clark Lea

It is the SEC Media Days, and this gets players the chance to interact with members of the media ahead of the 2025 season. One of the players interacting with reporters was Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia and he opened up about his relationships to reporters.

In one moment during his time at the SEC Media Days, the Vandy QB talked about his relationship with head coach Clark Lea in particular, and he revealed that Lea is in the know about some of the things happening in Diego Pavia’s personal life.

“That’s my dawg. Like anything, I feel like he’s my brother or something. I call him for anything. I was telling him my girlfriend problems the other day, actually,” he told reporters.

Like all the other SEC schools, Vanderbilt sent three players to face the media for the event, and the two teammates who joined him were Randon Fontenette and Martel Hight. He had been a big factor for the Commodores, leading the team to a 7-6 season and its first bowl game appearance since 2013.

Last season, Diego Pavia put up 2,293 yards, 20 passing touchdowns and only threw four picks for Vanderbilt. However, his court case against the NCAA, which opened up more possibilities for NIL for players across all sports, is considered his most significant contribution last year.

He took the NCAA to court so that he could still be eligible to play this season, arguing that his freshman season at the New Mexico Military Institute did not count because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He filed his lawsuit last year, arguing that his junior college years should not count against his NCAA eligibility, and the judge sided with him, opening doors for other athletes to play in college longer.

Diego Pavia Says Win Vs. No. 1 Alabama Last Year Was Special

During the SEC Media Days, Diego Pavia was also asked about their big upset win against Alabama, which was considered the No. 1 team in the SEC last year, and how special it was for the team. He admitted that the win was indeed a special one.

“I think the win over Alabama was big from a Vanderbilt standpoint of just allowing us to go get talent. And it eventually helped us go to a bowl game. Each one of those six wins was important. But that one, obviously they’re the No. 1-ranked team in the country. But when it comes down to it, every win was important. And I think that one was because we finally got people to believe kind of in Vanderbilt football,” he told reporters.

He also praised South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers, spoken about their matchup against Auburn, and last year’s heartbreaker against Texas where he admitted he needs to improve further as they return to Austin later this year.
