Under Troy Calhoun, the Air Force Falcons have been a consistent force in the Mountain West. The program hasn’t had a losing season since 2018 and has won a bowl game in four of the past five seasons.
Success led to the Air Force head coach receiving a contract extension in 2020, but what is Calhoun’s salary, contract, and net worth ahead of the 2024 college football season?
Troy Calhoun’s Salary and Contract in 2024
Calhoun’s contract runs through the 2025 college football season following the five-year extension signed in 2020. However, due to the Air Force athletics department operating as a private, non-profit organization — and therefore not obligated to report employee salary details — his salary for 2024 is unknown.
The finances for the military academy athletic department are taken care of by a non-profit called the Air Force Academy Athletic Corp. As a result, Calhoun’s salary — and that of his staff — remain private. The full terms of his contract are also private.
However, that hasn’t always been the case. Up to 2016, Air Force had provided information on Calhoun’s salary and contract, but with the switch to the non-profit model, they have declined requests for information from entities such as USA Today, which routinely compiles head coach salary information.
In 2016, Calhoun’s salary was $885,000, a steady rise from his initial base salary at Air Force of $550,000 in 2007.
Eight years later, it is reasonable to assume that the Falcons head coach is paid significantly more than that, especially given that Air Force Athletic Director Nathan Pine stated he felt “very good about where we are amongst our peers” when talking about Calhoun’s salary in 2020.
Calhoun received a contract extension in 2020 after delivering incredible success to the Air Force football program. It came on the back of an 11-2 campaign where the Falcons comfortably beat the Washington State Cougars — a Power Five opponent — in the Cheez-It Bowl.
Since then, Calhoun has navigated the turbulent air of the global pandemic-disrupted 2020 season before tallying consecutive 10-win seasons and a 9-4 campaign in 2023. With three successive bowl game wins, the Air Force head coach heads into the 2024 college football campaign with a 130-82 overall record.
In addition to the success, extending Calhoun’s contract sought to fend off the attention of other college football programs. At the time of signing his extension, he had been linked with the Colorado Buffaloes job, with multiple other Power Five programs coveting the skills of the Falcons head coach.
Calhoun’s Net Worth
Although we know the length of his contract — presumably with another extension coming just around the corner — the lack of public information relating to Calhoun’s salary makes establishing his net worth somewhat difficult. However, we can make some assumptions about his potential salary based on his peers.
Colorado State head coach Jay Norvell has a salary of just over $1.7 million for the 2024 college football season. New San Diego State head coach Sean Lewis earns $1.75 million, as did UNLV head coach Barry Odom ahead of his own recent contract extension.

It isn’t out of the question that Calhoun’s salary falls within a close radius of that earned by Bohl, Norvell, and Tedford. Some reports suggest that after bonuses, Calhoun might earn up to $3 million in 2023, but a figure closer to $1.7 million feels like a more likely amount.
Given the five-year contract signed in 2020, with a presumed average of $1.7 million, Calhoun’s current net worth is $8.5 million. However, his actual worth to Air Force remains priceless, given the level of success that the former Falcon has brought to the program during his tenure.
