Bengals DE Trey Hendrickson’s College Football Days at FAU Shaped His No-Glove Pass-Rushing Style

Playing without gloves has turned Trey Hendrickson into one of football's best edge rushers.

Trey Hendrickson is one of the NFL’s best edge rushers, and part of the reason why is that he doesn’t wear gloves. It is time for fans to get a glimpse into why the star defender plays the game that way.

The Origin of Trey Hendrickson’s No-Glove Technique

While appearing on the Ross Tucker Podcast recently, Hendrickson chatted about why he doesn’t wear gloves when he plays.

“I fell off Tyrod Taylor a couple times, you know, and then the rest is history. I’m like, ‘I’m done with gloves.’ I’m gonna grind it out,’ and that was it, and now we’re here.”

While Hendrickson flip-flopped between using his gloves and not while at FAU, he officially made the move while with the New Orleans Saints as a rookie.

Over the last five seasons, the former Saint-turned-Cincinnati Bengal has recorded four seasons with at least 13.5 sacks.

It is safe to say that the no-glove strategy has greatly paid off for Hendrickson.

The four-time Pro-Bowler has recorded 70.5 sacks over that aforementioned five-year stretch. He has also notched 137 quarterback hits, along with 65 tackles for loss, in that timeframe.

Trey Hendrickson Requests Trade From Cincinnati

Just recently, Hendrickson requested a trade from the Bengals after being with them for four years.

The Bengals’ problem is that they can tend to be a hit-or-miss team, depending on their health year in and year out.

With players like Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and possibly Tee Higgins all either making or set to make record-setting money, the organization may not have the money to pay everyone.

Hendrickson could be the odd man out, but he also may want to play for a true contender.

If the Bengals were to trade him, they would likely want to do it with a team out of the conference.

Perhaps a team like the Green Bay Packers, who are both out of the AFC North and have a need for an edge rusher, could be a great option.

With the cap space that Green Bay possesses, Hendrickson could get paid in a big way if he continues on his current trajectory.

Time will tell what the Bengals will do in regard to trading their best defensive player on the line.
