Which Transfer Portal QBs Should Start in 2023?

When isolating down to just quarterbacks in the transfer portal, it’s easy to get a clearer picture at just which signal-callers should make a big difference in 2024. That’s either because they’re leaving behind a starting job or they’re likely to land a starting job at their new school.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at which quarterbacks should likely land — or at least battle for — the starting quarterback role at their new schools in 2024.

    Dillon Gabriel – Oregon

With the departure of his former offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, now-former Oklahoma and UCF QB Dillon Gabriel found greener pastures in Eugene, Oregon. Or should we say ponds? See what we did there. Ducks. Ponds. I digress.

Gabriel landed in Oregon with the Ducks losing sixth-year and SEC-transfer Bo Nix to the NFL Draft this offseason. Following back-to-back seasons with at least 3,500 yards and a 4,145-yard season in 2023, Nix put an elite roadmap toward success as a transfer quarterback playing on the biggest stage.

There should be no reason why Gabriel can’t follow in the footsteps of Nix, if not elevate the team around him as Gabriel enters the picture at Oregon far more advanced than where Nix entered the picture back in 2022. Gabriel is hunting the all-time passing yards record in college football and a 4,353-yard season would get him there.

    That’s possible at Oregon.

    Taylen Green – Arkansas

It’s not often that a conference championship-winning quarterback opts in to the portal following a resurgence of his career. But that saying is likely going to change to “it is very often” that that scenario happens as the transfer portal era is just getting started.

Taylen Green won the Mountain West Championship despite an interim head coach in charge and flashed his elite abilities during the Championship Game itself. Against UNLV, Green ran for 90 yards and two touchdowns while he threw for 226 yards and two more scores on 12 of 15 passing.

It was an elite performance and certainly generated him a ton of interest in the portal. In the end, it was Bobby Petrino and the new-look Arkansas offense that landed the 6’6″, 221-pound quarterback.

Petrino, who famously developed Lamar Jackson at Louisville, now has his sights set on doing the same thing with the supremely talented Green. Don’t be surprised if this duo doesn’t evolve as a darkhorse Heisman candidate through the offseason and into fall camp.

    Riley Leonard – Notre Dame

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are quickly becoming transfer portal QBU after taking in their second ACC starter in consecutive seasons. The Irish are hoping to be a bounce-back stop for Riley Leonard who struggled with injuries in 2023.

In fact, Leonard injured himself against the same Notre Dame team that ultimately was his biggest suitor.

Leonard emerged onto the scene in 2022 with his arm talent, decision-making, and athleticism. Though he struggled to find any consistency in 2023, the future is incredibly bright in a QB-friendly system run in South Bend. He’s transferring in to take over for Sam Hartman and vault himself back into the NFL Draft conversation next year.

    Hank Bachmeier – Wake Forest

Hammering Hank Bachmeier has finally been given his Power Five chance. Fine, Bachmeier could’ve likely chosen a P5 school in the portal last season or even as a high school recruit, but his path has been that of resolve and resilience throughout his career instead.

One of the toughest quarterbacks there is, Bachmeier is also one of the savviest and smartest signal-callers at this point during his collegiate career. He should slide into a QB situation at Wake Forest that needs a veteran leader and a tough one at that as they continue to improve on the offensive line.

    Tyler Shough – Louisville

The Louisville offense took in former Cal (and Purdue) QB Jack Plummer this past season and they’re taking in yet another well-traveled QB for 2024. Tyler Shough transfers in for one last season in college after stops with Oregon and Texas Tech.

His final season didn’t go as planned in Lubbock, and that can largely be said about his entire career to date. With injuries plaguing each of his seasons as a college quarterback, when he’s healthy, Shough is surely a dynamic passer.

MORE: College Football Transfer Portal Tracker

The offense at Louisville isn’t what we’ve become accustomed to seeing Shough play within, but it should certainly be one that fits his strengths. Shough can deliver on-time throws from the pocket and has enough arm strength to challenge defenses at every level.

The fit is unique, but the possible rewards are incredibly high for Shough and Louisville in 2024.

    Brendan Sorsby – Cincinnati

Wildly underrated for the job he did at Indiana this past season, Brendan Sorsby becomes another transfer QB looking to find his footing in Cincinnati, following Emory Jones this past season and Ben Bryant a year prior.

Sorsby, however, may present the better of their most recent transfer portal options and may give the Bearcats some continuity at the position with three years of eligibility left. He’s a tall and powerful quarterback from within the structure of the offense and was terrific when he was able to force the ball downfield with Indiana.

He’ll give his playmakers a chance to success and had great success when the Hoosiers’ rushing attack got going, something Cincinnati will hope to improve on in 2024.

    Blake Shapen – Mississippi State

We’re a far cry from Blake Shapen leading Baylor to the Big 12 Championship in 2022, but we’re not that distant from the talent that did so. While we were always concerned about the long-term fit with Shapen under Jeff Grimes and Co. in the Baylor offense, Shapen’s talents were always apparent.

Shapen heads to Starkville under new head coach Jeff Lebby after Lebby saw him in person when Oklahoma and Baylor met in 2022. That game, however, was not the shining example of Shapen’s abilities and one of just two starts in his career that he didn’t throw a single touchdown.

His career needs a rebound, and the Bulldogs will hope Shapen is more the quarterback who elevated the Baylor talent over the past two years, not the one who was battered and beaten at seemingly every dropback last season.
