Toronto Argonauts Target Shedeur Sanders for CFL Rights Following 2025 NFL Draft

The Toronto Argonauts have added Shedeur Sanders to their negotiation list following his unexpected slide at the 2025 NFL draft. Sanders was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the No. 144 pick in the draft but his future remains uncertain and he could now end up in the CFL.

Toronto Argonauts Add Shedeur Sanders to CFL Negotiation List After NFL Draft

Each team in the CFL are allowed to compile a 45-player negotiation list, holding the rights of those players should they decide to sign with the league. This means that the Toronto Argonauts now have the first chance to sign the quarterback if he decides to ply his trade in the Canadian Football League.

However, the 23-year-old is yet to comment on the possibility of joining the Argonauts.

Sanders’ selection by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft last weekend came as a shock to everyone. The 23-year-old son of Colorado head coach Deion Sanders was widely expected to be a first or second-round pick in the draft.

Following the shocking slide, the Toronto Argonauts have decided to add the quarterback to their negotiation list. That gives the Argonauts the right to sign Sanders first if he ever becomes interested in playing in the CFL. However, it is unlikely Sanders will be interested in such a move this year, as the Canadian Football League season kicks off in June.

Sanders’ focus for the next couple of months will be to get himself into the Cleveland Browns’ roster. The 23-year-old’s chances of making it into the roster appear slim at the moment.

The Browns already have three quarterbacks- Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Joe Flacco- on their books, and Sanders could struggle to find his way in. The Argonauts will be monitoring the situation very closely.

Is a Move to the CFL on the Cards?

While a move to the CFL is unlikely at this time, anything could happen in the coming months especially if the 23-year-old doesn’t make the roster. The Browns’ decision to select him despite already having three quarterbacks was met with mixed reactions.

The Browns acquired veterans Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco before the draft, but Deshaun Watson ruptured his Achilles and is expected to miss the 2025 season, leaving Cleveland with four quarterbacks competing for roster spots. This leaves Sanders with a decision to make, and the Argonauts are in pole position to pounce.

Sanders wouldn’t be the first highly rated Browns quarterback to make the move to the CFL should he decide to. Johnny Manziel was drafted in the first round by the Cleveland Browns in 2014, but Manziel ended up in the CFL in 2018.
