Louisville had landed a significant portal addition with tight end Davon Mitchell, a former four-star recruit and top-200 national prospect. Mitchell, who initially enrolled at Oklahoma after reclassifying from the 2025 to the 2024 class, didn’t appear in a game during his freshman season in Norman. While early struggles adjusting to the college level impacted his progress, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables acknowledged Mitchell’s development.

Former Oklahoma Tight End Davon Mitchell Commits to Louisville, Boosting Cardinals’ 2025 Offensive Firepower
Louisville has secured a key addition for its 2025 roster with the commitment of Davon Mitchell, a former Oklahoma tight end and top-tier recruit who entered the NCAA transfer portal this spring. The Cardinals hosted Mitchell on an official visit April 29-30 and, per multiple reports from Pete Nakos, ended his recruitment after completing evaluations of his medicals and overall fit.

Originally from York, Alabama, Mitchell spent part of his high school career at Allen (Texas) before transferring to Los Alamitos (California), where he finished his prep journey. Initially part of the 2025 class, he reclassified to 2024 and was rated as a four-star prospect and top-200 overall recruit by On3. He was also ranked just outside the top 10 at his position and among the top 15 players in California.
He committed to Oklahoma over programs such as Alabama, Georgia, and Miami, becoming one of the Sooners’ premier signees in their 2024 top-10 class. Despite high expectations, he didn’t see the field during his freshman year and was no longer part of the program until early April, leading to his portal entry.
Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables addressed Mitchell’s early struggles transitioning to college life.
“When Davon got here, Davon will be the first to tell you it took him a little while to transition,” Venables said last fall. “Having great focus wasn’t something that he had in the spring… just timeliness, showing up with the right clothes on, being on time, turning in assignments… he couldn’t get out of his own way.”
Venables noted that Mitchell made progress later in the year:
“He’s flipped the switch. He’s been getting after it. He’s been accountable. And he’s been a scout team player of the week.”

Ranked No. 349 overall and the No. 15 tight end among spring portal entries, Mitchell becomes Louisville’s 27th portal addition—eighth this spring—including fellow tight ends C.J. Jacobsen (Utah) and Jacob Stewart (San José State). The Cardinals finished 9-4 last season and open 2025 against Eastern Kentucky on Aug. 30.
