The news of Carlos Alcaraz’s comeback is running wild as the Spaniard is all set to make a return at the Cincinnati Open in August. However, Serena Williams’ former coach has urged the Spaniard not to rush into the game and, if needed, take some more time off for better recovery to avoid a career-threatening setback.
Rennae Stubbs, who has coached Serena Williams during her comeback, recently spoke about the conversation she had with Carlos Alcaraz on Instagram on the latest episode of The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast. Stubbs mentioned that while it felt great seeing the Spaniard back on the practice court, she still felt the need to drop some serious advice in his DMs.
Stubbs, who herself had faced a wrist injury during her professional tennis years, did not want him to rush the process. She said:
“Every now and again, I will say, he does respond to me on Instagram, and I did when he was hitting balls, I did say it was great to see him back, and he said hopefully soon I will be hitting it harder, and that was at the end of June, and one of the things that I did write to him was that I did have a wrist injury for seven months and I said please take your time. If it’s swollen in any way, you shouldn’t even try to play anymore.”
Despite the warning, Stubbs struck an optimistic note on Alcaraz’s road to recovery. She believes that this long hiatus will not impact his overall physical conditioning. Only his tennis would need catching up.
“He is taking his time, and it is probably a good idea, and his fitness is good because you can do anything you want with a wrist injury. To a certain degree, he’s not going to be lifting anything above his head, but certainly his legs will have been worked hard. So physically he should be okay, but getting back on the tennis court and hitting tennis balls is the predominant thing that he needs to do, so we will see, hopefully, if that happens.”
Alcaraz suffered a wrist injury in April during the first round of the Barcelona Open and has since been out of action. Despite this, Alcaraz has been actively providing updates on his injury and has also attended the FIFA World Cup Final, although sporting a wrist brace.
Carlos Alcaraz Set For Cincinnati Return
After months of being sidelined, Carlos Alcaraz has geared up for his highly anticipated return to tennis. The seven-time Grand Slam champion had recently received encouraging medical updates from his doctors, who revealed that his wrist was all good.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that the Spaniard has his name on the entry list of the US Open men’s singles. The list also includes the reigning Wimbledon champion, Jannik Sinner, runner-up and current Roland Garros champion, Alexander Zverev, and Ben Shelton.
Alcaraz has been ranked at No. 3 on the list. He is the reigning Cincinnati Open champion, and it remains to be seen if his wrist can now withstand the demands of the hard court.
