LeBron James’ unexpected decision to leave the Lakers and explore free agency ahead of the upcoming season has shocked fans and analysts worldwide, sparking widespread speculation about his next team. The debate has even reached Wimbledon, where Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, shared her thoughts following her surprising round-of-16 upset over Aryna Sabalenka on Sunday.
During the post-game media interview, Osaka said she wears the Kobe Bryant jersey but was caught up in the loop surrounding James’ next landing spot for a record 24th season in the NBA. She told reporters she had heard speculation that James could team up with Steph Curry at the Golden State Warriors next season, which would send major shockwaves through the sports world.
“I mean, I wear the jersey for Kobe. For LeBron, I know it’s big news. I know that teams have traded other players, like Giannis. It’s kind of all speculation. I don’t watch basketball enough. But I heard he might play with Steph Curry, which is really cool, which would also be very overpowered. It would be fun to see as a casual fan,” Osaka said
Osaka dominated her round of 16 match against Sabalenka, preventing the World No. 1 from settling at any point. She won the first set 6-2, but the Belarusian challenged her in the second, leading to a tiebreak. Osaka stayed resilient and secured the victory, qualifying for the quarterfinals at the All England Tennis and Croquet Club for the first time in her career.
Naomi Osaka Reflected on Overcoming Outside Noise With Increased Expectations After R16 Win
A journalist asked how Osaka plans to handle the external noise now that she is under increased pressure to potentially go the distance for the title after her exciting victory over Sabalenka.
“I think I’m actually quite good at shutting out outside noise. Obviously, like, everyone around me knows how well I can play. For me, that’s the most important thing, is just me building confidence in myself. Whatever happens is kind of like outside noise. I don’t need to pay attention to it; I just need to focus on the things that I can do,” Osaka said.
Osaka will now face a difficult opponent, Karolina Muchova, in the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Tuesday.
