Coco Gauff recently touched on the superstitious side of compatriot and ATP star Taylor Fritz after she was asked to recall some of her United Cup experiences. Gauff and Fritz played pivotal roles in Team USA’s United Cup success last year, and in the ongoing 2026 edition of the international mixed team tennis event, they have once again led the team’s charge to the quarterfinals, keeping their title defense alive and well.
Amid her ongoing United Cup participation in Australia, the World No. 4 in women’s singles tennis featured as a guest on an episode of The Player’s Box Podcast, which is co-hosted by Gauff’s fellow American women’s tennis stars Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys, Jennifer Brady and Desirae Krawczyk. Here, the two-time singles Major champion spoke about Fritz’s ‘escape room’ superstition, saying:
“Just the escape rooms. Taylor’s so superstitious, doing the escape rooms every day. It was fun, but he always wanted to be the guy to finish the room.”
Gauff went on to state that despite Fritz’s obsession with escape rooms amid Team USA’s past United Cup campaigns, he didn’t fare too well when it came to completing them. The 21-year-old added:
“I’ll see him soon, but he was only the guy in one of them that I can remember.”
Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz set for stern test against Stefanos Tsitsipas & Maria Sakkari-led Greece in United Cup QF
On the tennis front at the ongoing 2026 United Cup, Gauff and Fritz would have to be at their very best in the quarterfinals, where Team USA will lock horns with Greece. The Greek contingent, spearheaded by the double resurgence of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari, have swept all before them so far in the competition.
In the Round Robin phase, Tsitsipas and Sakkari won both their respective singles encounters against Japan and then combined brilliantly to win their mixed doubles outing as well. They were at it again when it came to dealing with Great Britain in singles. Both players needed three sets to overcome the threats of Billy Harris and Emma Raducanu, with the hard-fought wins proving decisive after Greece lost the opening mixed doubles match of the tie.
Meanwhile, Fritz lost his first singles outing in the Round Robin phase to Argentina’s Sebastian Baez, while Gauff was defeated by Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the USA’s second tie, with both results indicating that the American ATP and WTA stars are yet to reach their peak form as the 2026 United Cup enters its final few days of competition.
