“Not a Mobile QB”: Shannon Sharpe Makes a Bold Tom Brady Comparison to Defend Shedeur Sanders’ Style After NFL Preseason Win Against Panthers

Shedeur Sanders had a successful debut with the Cleveland Browns this preseason. The Browns defeated the Carolina Panthers on the road 30-10, with Sanders leading the team. He threw for 138 passing yards and had two touchdown passes.

As expected, he didn’t contribute much to the running game. That isn’t who Shedeur Sanders is; he’s a man of the pocket. Talking on “Nightcap” this Saturday, Shannon Sharpe weighed in on Shedeur’s debut, highlighting the fact that the Browns quarterback isn’t particularly a mobile one, but that’s not a critique. He even made a comparison to arguably the biggest legend of the game, Tom Brady.

“That’s not Shedeur. Shedeur is not a mobile quarterback. He’s going to do almost the majority of his damage is going to be in the pocket. Ojo, he’s Tom Brad. Hey, I’m not saying he’s Tom Brady, but he has the athleticism. That’s not what he’s known for. Go ahead. This is the thing that he lacks in athleticism, and the inability to get out of the pocket,” Sharpe said.

“He has great pocket presence, being able to move and being able to not telegraph but understand when that clock is ticking and when it’s time to get up out of there, right? He can move extremely well within the pocket without having to take sacks. What about the third down? Huh? The third down, where he scrambled, ran the D-line, ran a stunt. He was able to get outside of it. I’d like you to know what I like the most? He saw the stunt and took off immediately,” he added.

Is a lack of mobility a weakness of Shedeur Sanders?

Mobility is a problem for Shedeur Sanders when the offensive line is unable to protect him. This is something we saw during his college career at Colorado. With a subpar offensive line, he became the most sacked quarterback from 2023 to 2024. In total, he was sacked 94 times, 52 in 2023 and 42 in 2024.

During that time, analysts and fans alike pointed out how difficult it seemed for the quarterback to run away from opposing defensive linemen. Some pointed out that even though Colorado’s offensive line was weak, Shedeur Sanders should be able to escape pressure from opposing defenses. The blitz became the signal-callers’ biggest enemy, as he was consistently captured by the opposition. The Browns will need to work on this.
