South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer shared a difficult memory from his childhood while discussing the past season and other topics with Griffin McVeigh of On3Sports. Beamer recalled challenging family events from his teenage years, including a medical emergency involving his father, legendary Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer.
Beamer has led the Gamecocks since 2020 and has done a solid job since taking over. This season, South Carolina finished with a 9-4 overall record, including a 5-3 mark against SEC opponents.
What Did Shane Beamer Reveal About His Childhood?
Beamer revealed that when he was about 12 years old, his father experienced a medical emergency while coaching a game between Virginia Tech and East Carolina in 1989. He recalled being on the sidelines when his father signaled for the team doctor, a moment that was concerning for their entire family.
Fortunately, Frank Beamer recovered and is doing well today.
“I remember being on the sidelines with him during a game,” Beamer said. “We were playing East Carolina, I believe, in 1989, and I remember him calling the team doctor over during the game. I couldn’t hear what he was saying, but I saw him point to his chest and say something,” Beamer said.
“Maybe the next morning or two mornings later, I remember waking up, and my mom telling me, ‘Dad is in the hospital,’ and explaining what was going on. I think I was 12 at the time. That’s something you don’t like to hear about your dad. He came out of it, and he’s doing well now,” he added.
Shane Beamer Signs Contract Extension Through 2030
Beamer himself signed a contract extension with the Gamecocks, securing his fate with the program through the 2030 season, at least.

“I’m proud to represent the University of South Carolina and to lead our football program as the head coach,” Beamer sated. “Thank you to President Amirides, Thad Westbrook and the Board of Trustees, Ray Tanner and Jeremiah Donati for their trust and support. As I’ve said before, this is my dream job. My family and I love being here. We’ve accomplished a lot on and off the field over the past four years, but we’re not satisfied.”
“There’s more to do and we’re just getting started.”
