Who is Ralphie VII? Colorado’s Newest Mascot Gets Fans Amped Up as Coach Prime’s Squad Faces Wyoming

NFL legend and Colorado Buffaloes’ head coach Deion Sanders recently had his team debut its newest mascot, Ralphie VII. On Saturday, Sept. 20, the Buffaloes program had Ralphie VII appear for the first time in front of the Colorado faithful, as she ran her first run at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado, during Sanders’ team’s home game against the Wyoming Cowboys.

Ralphie VII is a one-year-old American bison who will serve as the Buffaloes’ live mascot. She will succeed the program’s long and illustrious line of previous buffaloes that have run the University of Colorado’s football pitch. She weighs in at 700 pounds and is gifted by the Beauprez Family, owners of Eagle’s Wing Ranch in the state.

In a video posted by reporter Jake Schwanitz on X/Twitter, Ralphie VII is seen running for the first time out of the tunnels of Folsom Field, as coach Sanders and the Buffaloes make their entrance to face the Cowboys. As of writing, Colorado’s Week 4 matchup of the 2025 college football season is underway, with the team pursuing a 3-1 record in the season.

According to a report by Ben Armendariz of Sports Illustrated, Ralphie VII is slated to receive her official name after her debut game on Saturday. This is different from the long-standing tradition of the school naming its buffaloes ahead of time. The homegrown buffalo follows Ralphie VI, who was a similar-bred bison and was named ‘Ember’ for her fast prowess.

Other former names for the official Colorado mascot include Tequila, Rowdy, Blackout, and Moonshine.

Director of the Ralphie Live Mascot Program, Taylor Stratton, Releases Statement On Ralphie VII

Before Ralphie VII made her first official run on the Colorado Buffaloes’ home turf, the director of the Ralphie Live Mascot Program of the school, Taylor Stratton, issued a statement through the team’s official website. Stratton spoke about how the long run of Ralphies for the University of Colorado has become a tradition that excels beyond sports.

“Ralphie’s run is iconic, and our fans, students, faculty, staff, and alumni take an incredible amount of pride in this tradition, which transcends sports. We’re excited to be adding a new Ralphie to the lineage of incredible buffalo that have represented the University of Colorado and have elevated the fans’ passion for our student-athletes,” Stratton was quoted as saying.
