“Free Bye To The Second Round”: Fans React As No. 8 Oklahoma Secures Home Playoff Matchup Despite John Mateer’s Struggles

The bracket for the College Football Playoffs has now been revealed, and to the surprise of many, Oklahoma secured the No. 8 spot, which means that OU will be hosting No. 9 Alabama at home. This comes as John Mateer and the Sooners struggled over the last few games of the regular season.

Because Oklahoma has been struggling a lot lately, many fans poked fun at the Sooners, with several people predicting that whoever plays them, in this case, Alabama, would have an easy win.

“Whoever plays Oklahoma has a free bye to the second round,” one person said.

“Unironically the worst team in the playoffs,” one Miami fan said.

“Oklahoma should not be in the CFP.” another fan pointed out.

“The CFP process is an absolute joke. No reason Oklahoma was magically safe at 8. Alabama not sliding a single spot after getting handled. Magically deciding Miami is better than ND when they had the Irish ahead in every ranking. And thank goodness JMU got in to lose by 30,” said another person.

“These CFP rankings are a** why is Oklahoma in and not the Irish 🍀” asked one Notre Dame fan.

“Texas is good because they beat CFP bound Oklahoma, but Oklahoma sucks because they got beat by unranked Texas. 🤷,” one Longhorns fan noted.

A lot of college football fans also complained that Alabama made it to the CFP, as they had three losses, while others were saying Notre Dame should have made it. Others also stated that some snubs, including ACC champions Duke, made sense.

Oklahoma’s Path To The National Championship Will Be A Tough One

As Oklahoma struggled down the stretch, their earlier wins, including that upset over Alabama, were enough to propel the Sooners to a home-field advantage at the College Football Playoffs. However, their path to the Natty will be a tough one.

While they have beaten Alabama earlier this season, the Crimson Tide may be determined to exact revenge and beat the Sooners on their home field. If they do get past Alabama in the first round, awaiting them in the second round is No. 1 Indiana, which would be a bigger challenge than Alabama.

Should they upset the Hoosiers, there are still a lot of good teams that they could face in the final and semifinal, including Ohio State, Oregon and Georgia.
