In Week 7 of the 2024-2025 NFL season, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered a season-ending knee injury during the team’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Tests later showed that the star 49ers receiver suffered a torn ACL and MCL, which caused him to miss the remainder of last season.
Still recovering and going through rehab to repair his knee, the 49ers placed Aiyuk on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on July 18, 2025. Aiyuk was never activated during the preseason and has been on injured reserve for all of the 2025-2026 season.
As the 49ers prepare for Week 12 with just six games remaining in its regular season, an Aiyuk return will have to wait. As the 49ers begin practice this week, Aiyuk’s 21-day practice window returning from IR won’t be opened according to sources.
The 49ers won’t open the practice windows for either Brandon Aiyuk (knee) or Jacob Cowing (hamstring) this week, Shanahan said. Cowing’s won’t be opened until after the Week 14 bye. Aiyuk remains week to week, Shanahan said.

This means Aiyuk will be out of the team’s Week 12 game against the Carolina Panthers next Monday night. The 49ers have a Week 14 bye.
While Brandon Aiyuk remains sidelined, Brock Purdy made his return
While the San Francisco 49ers will still have to wait some time for Brandon Aiyuk‘s return, quarterback Brock Purdy made his return to the lineup yesterday.
Purdy suffered a turf toe and shoulder injury in the team’s season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. He missed the team’s Week 2 game against the New Orleans Saints. Purdy returned two weeks later against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and re-aggravated his turf toe injury.
As a result of the re-aggravated injury, Purdy missed the team’s next six games before making his return back yesterday against the Arizona Cardinals. In his return back, Purdy completed 19-26 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns in the team’s 41-22 win.
