President Donald Trump has been lambasted for his reaction to the news of Rob Reiner’s murder. The 78-year-old filmmaker and his wife, film producer Michele Singer, were found dead at their Los Angeles home on Monday. Police suspect their son, Nick Reiner, is responsible.

In a bizarre message on social media “Truth Social”, the President seemed to pin the death of Reiner on what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome”. The message has gotten backlash from all sides of the political divide. ESPN’s Steven A. Smith joined the chorus of discontent with Trump’s reaction on Monday afternoon, when on his YouTube show, he said:
“It’s the disgusting rethoric like this. There’s no place for it… Violence is violence… I’m taling about prioritizing a core level of decency. When somebody gets killed, whe somebody gets murdered, that ain’t the time to be sticking out your judgement and basically indicating that they brought it on themselves… There should never be any place for violence”
Smith also drew parallels to the death of political activist Charlie Kirk, when the New Right lambasted the left wing of the Democratic Party for implying that he brought it upon himself for supporting gun rights and the 2nd Amendment.
Reiner was a famed director, known for movies like “The Princess Bride”, “A Few Good Men”, and “When Harry Met Sally”, to name a few. He also had acting credits, most famously playing opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorcese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” as the father of white collar criminal Jordan Belfort.
His son, Nick Reiner, is reported to have struggled with substance abuse from a young age.
What Did President Donald Trump Say About Rob Reiner’s Death?
President Donald Trump went to his “Truth Social” account, as he usually does when he wants to speak directly to the public, and wrote the following message regarding Rob Reiner’s passing:
“Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.”

The message continued, and eventually he did say his condolences, but taking time to politicize the murder struck even his most ardent supporters as unnecessary. Trump was asked about his comments during a press conference at the White House on Monday, and he didn’t back down, saying that Reiner had been one of the people behind what he called the “Russia Hoax”.
