Is David Montgomery Getting Traded? What We Know About the Lions RB’s Future

Detroit Lions veteran running back David Montgomery witnessed a notable drop in his workload this season. Since the Nov. 9 game against the Washington Commanders, Montgomery has recorded no games of 10 or more carries since early November in 2025.

This has sparked speculation on the internet about whether Montgomery wants out of Detroit. In the meantime, the veteran running back’s latest social media activity has given no reason to believe that’s not the case.

    Is David Montgomery Getting Traded?

Recently, David Montgomery liked a fan comment on Instagram asking the veteran running back to request a trade. This gave fans plenty of reason to believe that Montgomery is expected to ask for a trade.

However, neither Montgomery nor Detroit has stated that they want to trade the running back. Right now, the idea of the same is running as a joke on social media.

Montgomery is under contract through 2027. If the running back requests a trade before June 1, 2026, Detroit could potentially move him and save some salary cap space. If they explore for trade after June 1, they will incur dead money on their cap savings.

Why David Montgomery’s Usage Has Gone Down?

David Montgomery’s usage going down is consistent with the rise of Jahmyr Gibbs, who has evolved into the team’s primary running back, giving him more workload than the veteran. While Montgomery has received 140 touches for 649 yards and eight touchdowns, Gibbs has rushed the ball 207 times for 1,102 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell has publicly praised Montgomery’s professionalism despite the reduced role.

“David’s a pro,” Campbell said, via Colton Pouncy of The Athletic. “He goes about his business; he handles it. I know that’s not easy. That’s not easy. … He’s a damn good back. Every good player wants their chance to help the team win and get some production, so I know it can’t be easy.”

Campbell also said that they are exploring ways to integrate Montgomery more in a game. At the moment, there doesn’t appear to be any reason why the Lions would let go of their running back at this stage of the season.
