The New York Giants are officially not making it to the playoffs after losing to Detroit last Sunday, with the team’s defense collapsing against the Lions. This resulted in the team firing their defensive coordinator, Shane Bowen, shortly after the loss.
The game was actually close, the final score being 34-27, though the game did go to overtime. The Giants had the chance to win but their defense collapsed late in the game, leading to Bowen’s firing.

Despite the firing after that defensive collapse, fans were left unimpressed, as many believed general manager Joe Schoen should have been the one fired. Others, however, were celebrating. These comments from fans come a week after Brian Daboll was fired as the team’s head coach.
“Giants firing everyone but the GM. Who is the actual problem,” one fan pointed out.
“Bro, firing Shane Bowen is wild because the Giants’ defense was already trending “meh,” and now it’s just chaos management season. New coordinator, new scheme, same roster — fans are about to find out if change actually fixes anything or if it’s just more noise,” noted another fan.
“Giants defense didn’t need a coordinator… they needed witnesses,” another person joked.
“They should fire whoever decided not to kick a field goal to go up 6 at the end of the game,” added another one.
“this was totally expected after they gave up 1,000 yards of offense and blew another lead to the Lions yesterday,” said one person.
Who is Giants’ Interim DC? All We Know About Charlie Bullen
As for who will be acting as interim defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, it will be Charlie Bullen, who is also the team’s outside linebackers coach. This was confirmed by sports journalist Josina Anderson.
I’m told interim head coach Mike Kafka informed the coaches that outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen will be the interim defensive coordinator, per league source. https://t.co/Z4zqkcPMjl

Bullen may have been the team’s linebackers coach, but he has no prior experience as a defensive coordinator. His choice raised a few eyebrows, as defensive line coach Andre Patterson and secondary coach Marquand Manuel had better experience at the job.
He does have a coaching experience of 18 years, 12 years in the NFL, though he mostly specializes in outside linebackers and not the entire defensive squad.
