Analyst Tosses Ex Raiders HC’s Name In The Mix Amid Giants Coaching Search After Brian Daboll’s Sudden Firing

The Brian Daboll era at the New York Giants came to an abrupt end at the start of the week, when the team’s ownership decided to end his tenure for a lack of positive results. This followed a 20-24 defeat to the Chicago Bears, which moved the team to an overall record of 2-8.

Currently, they sit at the bottom of the NFC East. For the time being, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has been made the team’s interim head coach, and while he’s widely expected to have an interview to hold the position long term, analysts are already looking to other names in the game as potential long-term replacements for Daboll.

The NFL Network’s insider Ian Rapoport brought up an interesting name this week to the conversation: former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce.

“Kafka, I believe, will get a head coach interview; generally, the interim coach does. If we are talking about some names to watch, I wouldn’t be surprised if they got a little bit of nod to the Tom Coughlin era, maybe take a look at Steve Spagnuolo, their former respected defensive coordinator. He’s been with the Chiefs. That would be one name. Antonio Pierce would be another name to watch,” said Rapoport.

What’s The Connection Between Antonio Pierce And The New York Giants?

Antonio Pierce spent some of the best years of his NFL career with the New York Giants, between 2005 and 2009. He won a Super Bowl with them in 2008 (Super Bowl XLII). During that time, he also earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2006.

Since retiring in 2009, the former linebacker has turned to coaching. Between 2018 and 2021, he was with the Arizona State Sun Devils, rising from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator. From there, he went to the Las Vegas Raiders, where he started as a linebackers coach in 2022 and was promoted to interim head coach in 2023 halfway through the season.

For the 2024 season, he was promoted to the head coach position but was fired in the offseason in 2025. His overall head coaching record isn’t inspiring, with a record of 9-17. The 4-13 record of the 2024 season would be especially worrisome for the Giants.

Could he be the one to replace Brian Daboll?
