Should I Start Josh Downs or Alec Pierce in Week 10? Fantasy Matchups And WR Outlooks Explored

The Indianapolis Colts have one of the better wide receiver trios in the NFL with Michael Pittman Jr., Alec Pierce, and Josh Downs. Pittman is unarguably the team’s No. 1 WR/most reliable of the bunch, as he leads the team in receptions, targets, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.

Add in Pierce and Downs as well as rookie sensation tight end, Tyler Warren, for the supporting cast that has allowed quarterback Daniel Jones to thrive with his new team. Because of their collective effort to go with running back Jonathan Taylor, the Colts currently sit at 7-2 and first place in the AFC South heading into Week 10.

Josh Downs Fantasy Outlook

So far this season, Josh Downs has 35 receptions for 313 yards and three receiving touchdowns. He ranks fourth in receiving yards on the team, third in receptions, and is tied for second for receiving touchdowns.

Downs has had four games where he’s had at leas six receptions and has scored a touchdown in three different games.

Alec Pierce Fantasy Outlook

Alec Pierce has 24 receptions for 501 yards this season. He has not scored a touchdown yet. Pierce ranks fifth in receptions, third in receiving yards, is fourth in targets (45.) His 20.9 yards per catch leads the team and is the ninth-best average in the NFL.

Pierce has shown consistency, recording at least 67 receiving yards in five of the seven games he’s been active for. He leads the team in receiving yards per game with 71.6.

The Verdict

It’s a tough call to pick between starting Alec Pierce or Josh Downs this season, as they’re both very similar in terms of total production. Downs might be the safer choice for a few reasons.

One, Downs has three touchdowns, and they’ve all come in the last three games. He also has more receptions and seems to be more of a possession receiver. Pierce averages more yards a game and is the better ‘boom or bust’ option. For this, Downs might bet viewed as the safer choice, though Pierce could very well outperform Downs.
