For over a year now, Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic have found ways to torment each other off the court. On Wednesday, a hip hop song was Doncic’s instrument of choice to get on the nerves of Reaves.
As the 6-foot-5 guard spoke with reporters at a media availability, “Texas” by BigXthaPlug blared loudly in the locker room. Immediately identifying the culprit of his media session’s interruption, Reaves fired back at his frenemy.
“You only like the song ’cause it says your name!”
Reporters then told Austin Reaves that Luka Doncic already left the vicinity. Realizing defeat, Reaves just had to shrug off this latest prank.
To Reaves’ credit, he was well aware that Doncic’s chosen song contained a reference to the Slovenian star. Midway through the 2022 song “Texas,” BigXthaPlug raps, “I been feelin’ like Luka how I ball that shit a blessin'”
The song, of course, was released when Doncic was still the main man of the Dallas Mavericks. In February 2025, he made headlines when he was shipped by Mavs GM Nico Harrison to the LA Lakers.
Since arriving in LA, Doncic has cultivated strong bonds with LeBron James and Austin Reaves. Whereas his dynamic with James presents itself as a relationship anchored on respect, he has taken a different route with Reaves, engaging in shenanigans every so often with the 27-year-old guard.
Report: Austin Reaves Will Decline His $14.9 Million Player Option
By the time that Luka Doncic played his musical prank on Austin Reaves, news of Reaves’ latest contract development had already broken.
On Tuesday, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that Reaves would be declining his $14.9 million player option and entering unrestricted free agency.
The Lakers are reportedly interested in re-signing Reaves, but there’s also a possibility that he will part ways with the purple and gold squad to become the main man elsewhere.
