Anthony Davis might not be traded to the Golden State Warriors despite intense speculation. Davis would fill an obvious need for the Warriors at center with his rim protection, paint scoring and rebounding. However, the Warriors would need to make a bold move by offloading one of Draymond Green or Jimmy Butler.
It seems the Warriors will stay put, as NBA insider Jake Fischer’s latest report suggests that Davis has two suitors, who are still expressing interest in acquiring him. Fischer named the Atlanta Hawks and Toronto Raptors as Davis’ potential landing spots on Tuesday.
“We keep hearing Toronto is involved in AD,” Fischer said. “There are gonna be other teams too that check around on it. I think, for now, though, just confidently speaking, publicly, I think Toronto and Atlanta are still the only teams that we can talk about as confirmed teams that are interested in pursuing Anthony Davis.”
The Warriors’ sense of urgency might be as high as the Hawks and the Raptors, but they don’t have assets they would wish to part with to complete a trade. Atlanta and Toronto, on the other hand, can make a realistic push without drastic measures.
Anthony Davis landing on either team would make it an instant wild card in the Eastern Conference, given the supporting cast they have around a player like him.
Anthony Davis trade remains unlikely for now
An Anthony Davis midseason trade remains unlikely for now, despite the existing trade rumors. It will likely come down to the final few days before the February deadline, as that’s when teams can truly assess their own and Davis’ situation. The 10-time All-Star is earning $54.1 million this season and has two more years with a player option on his deal.
He’s also extension eligible next summer. According to multiple reports, Davis wants to extend his contract, whether it’s in Dallas or elsewhere. Trading for him would be a high-risk, high-reward deal due to his injury history, especially over the last year. Davis has missed 16 games this season alone.
At 32, he isn’t getting any younger. Nevertheless, Anthony Davis remains one of the most impactful players on the court when available as he’s efficient on both ends of the floor.
