Head coach Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys are not off to a strong start to the season. After a bye week in Week 3, the Cowboys played on Friday and lost 19-12 to Tulsa. This came after losing 69-3 to No. 6-ranked Oregon in Week 2. The team’s only win came over UT Martin to start the season.

Gundy is the long-time coach of the Cowboys. He has led the team since 2005, helping them win a Big 12 championship in 2011. He also won the Big 12 Coach of the Year award three times, including most recently in 2023. However, last season was terrible for the Cowboys as they went 3-9. Now that another season is off to a bad start, there is starting to be a conversation around whether Gundy will be fired.
There has not been an indication from Oklahoma State management that they are leaning towards firing Gundy yet. However, at his press conference after the game on Friday, Gundy was asked directly about fans wondering if he should be the head coach anymore. Gundy gave a blunt response.
“Those aren’t decisions that I make,” Mike Gundy said. “My decision is to do exactly what I mentioned earlier and get these guys and keep moving forward and go on down the road and that’s what we do.”
When pressed by reporters to delve deeper into his position as the head coach of the Cowboys, Gundy elaborated.
“Well, it’s different obviously. You know, in 21 years it’s a different position that I’ve been in. But, um, as I say every week, you know, my job is to evaluate the overall program, players, the systems, and then be able to put it down and think about it. What do we need to do to improve? And then I have to make a decision on where we’re at based on what we have. And that’s what I do,” he said.
While there are fans calling for his job, it is unlikely Oklahoma State fires Gundy before conference games are played. Given his long tenure with the team, he will likely get more leeway than other coaches.

Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys Will Have A Chance To Bounce Back Against Baylor Next Week
While Oklahoma State is off to a disappointing start to the season, one of their losses came against a top team in the nation in Oregon. As a result, there is some leniency that can be allowed to Gundy for that loss. While the Tulsa loss was disappointing, it was an out-of-conference matchup.
Next week will be a big test for Oklahoma State as it plays its first conference game against Baylor. A win there could be a sign of good things to come.
