Will UNC Make March Madness? Analyzing the Tar Heels’ NCAA Tournament Chances

One of the biggest brands in college basketball could be at risk of missing the NCAA Tournament as things stand right now. That brand is the North Carolina Tar Heels, and Hubert Davis’ team is fighting to earn an at-large bid for March Madness.

Where the North Carolina Tar Heels Stand Right Now

The Tar Heels currently have an overall record of 20-11 (13-6 in ACC play). While the team from Chapel Hill was in a really dangerous position over a month ago, it has won six games in a row and put itself in a much better position to try to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Davis’ team has scored over 80 points in each of their last six wins, including three consecutive games of at least 90 points, and is coming off a 32-point blowout victory on the road at Virgina Tech.

If you want to both make and excel in the NCAA Tournament, you want to be playing your best basketball at the right time. The Tar Heels seem to be doing just that.

    The Future of UNC’s Season

If the season ended today, the Tar Heels likely would be in the NCAA Tournament, considering they have 20+ wins and a solid conference record. However, they don’t have a ranked win on the season. But they still have one more opportunity to pad their portfolio ahead of the ACC Tournament.

The Tar Heels will host the No. 2-ranked Duke Blue Devils this Saturday in their final regular-season game. A win here could certainly cement North Carolina’s status as an NCAA Tournament team.

However, a loss here might take the team a step back because they would then go into ACC Tournament play without a signature win.

If they lose in the first or second round of the ACC Tournament, the selection committee might reconsider giving them a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

While the team is easily playing their best basketball of the season, a loss to their arch-rivals and a short stint in the ACC Tournament could still crush the postseason hopes of the team and fan base from Chapel Hill.
