Top 5 Biggest Upsets in March Madness 2026 so far

    1. (9) Iowa 73, (1) Florida 72

So far, the biggest upset this year has been with the 2025 national champions falling to No. 9-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes in the last minute of their second-round game.

Not only was Florida the national champion last year, but it was also this year’s SEC regular-season champions. The game had it all, including a first-half brawl where both coaches almost came to blows, but overall, it was a huge surprise.

    2. (11) Texas 74, (3) Gonzaga 68

Gonzaga has become a staple in the last rounds of the NCAA Tournament over the last decade. It was surprising then, when the 11th-seeded Longhorns took out the No. 3-seeded Bulldogs in the second round of the tourney.

Not only that, but Texas had just come from another upset over No. 6 BYU in the first round of March Madness. It’s especially impressive that it is going to the Sweet 16, considering it couldn’t even get out of the first round of the SEC Tournament.

    3. (5) St. John’s 67, (4) Kansas 65

Kansas was looking like one of the best programs in the nation, until it clashed with the St John’s Red Storm. Yes, St John’s had already given UConn a run for its money in the Big East regular season and tournament. So it isn’t really that much of a surprise that it could take on the Kansas Jayhawks, but that doesn’t diminish the upset.

    4. (12) High Point 83, (5) Wisconsin 82 (First Round)

When the NCAA Tournament West region bracket came up, it was a forgone conclusion that the Wisconsin Badgers would advance to play the Arkansas Razorbacks in the second round of the tourney.

But the High Point Panthers bent history in their direction and managed to get to the second round of the Big Dance. They don’t rank higher on the list because the Hogs easily dispatched them 94-88 in the second round of March Madness.

    5. (6) Tennessee 79, (3) Virginia 72

When the bracket for the Midwest region came up, most fans thought the Sweet 16 game of the lower part of the bracket would be between Virginia and the Iowa State Cyclones. Tennessee thought differently. First, it defeated the regular-season undefeated Miami (OH) RedHawks in the First Round and then, with a razor-thin victory over Virginia in the second round.
