It’s no secret that Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo is a living legend, but just how good is his legacy in the Big Ten? Tom Izzo has cemented himself as a college basketball hall of famer and is one of the greatest head coaches of all time.
Izzo has been the head coach of the Michigan State Spartans since 1995 and has led them to a national title in 2000 and 26 straight NCAA tournament appearances. He has been dominant in his time with the Spartans, but where does the legend rank in Big Ten history?

Izzo holds first place in four different all-time Big Ten categories for coaches, further proving his impressive legacy.

Izzo leads the conference in all-time Big Ten wins, leading the Spartans to 359 conference victories during his time as head coach. His number of conference wins alone highlights the consistency he has brought to the program.
The legendary coach is also tied for first place with 11 Big Ten regular season conference titles after locking up his most recent title in 2025. As a side note, Izzo also holds the record for most Big Ten tournament titles, winning six in his time with Michigan State.
Not only does Izzo dominate in terms of regular season success, but he also ranks first in tournament wins among all-time Big Ten coaches, with 56 in his career. Izzo doesn’t just win a lot of tournament games; he takes his team deep, leading the Big Ten with eight final four appearances all time.
Izzo holds numerous titles, but at this point in his career, I imagine he wants to add another national championship to his already-stacked resume.

The good news is that the Spartans are having their best season in a while and are a projected three-seed in the tournament as of right now. If Izzo could win it all this year, it would only further elevate him among the all-time greats.
