    Before becoming one of the best coaches that Michigan State has ever seen, Tom Izzo played for Northern Michigan University from 1973-1977. In his senior year at the school, Izzo set a record for most minutes played and was named a Division II All-American.

    Fast forward to today, Izzo is known as one of the greatest minds in college basketball. His time at Michigan State has more than shown why that’s the case. He started with Michigan State in 1983 as an assistant coach and would take over head coaching duties in 1995 in a position he’s held until today.

    As a head coach, Izzo’s record speaks for itself. He currently has an astonishing 733 wins and 300 losses. In March Madness, Izzo has brought Michigan State to a fantastic record of 56 wins and just 25 losses. He has also impressed within his own conference, with 360 wins and 173 losses.

    He has brought Michigan State to one Division I Tournament Championship in 2000. He has also brought the team to eight Final Four appearances, 11 Big Ten regular season championships, and six Big Ten Tournament Championships. However, his impressive accolades don’t stop there.

    He’s a two-time NABC Coach of the Year, a Clair Bee Coach of the Year award winner, and an AP College Coach of the Year award winner. He has also won the Henry Iba Award and is a four-time Big Ten Coach of the Year award winner. He has also won the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.

    Perhaps Izzo’s best record came in 1999-00 when he brought Michigan State to a Division I Championship win. Michigan State finished the 1999-00 season with an outstanding record of 32 wins and seven losses, including a whopping 13 wins and just three losses in conference play.

    This year, he’s on track to continue to do great things with Michigan State. Michigan State currently has a record of 26 wins and five losses. Also, Michigan State has obtained its most impressive conference record yet, with 17 wins and just three losses. They are first in the conference and are expected to go far in March Madness.
