Tom Izzo has cemented his legacy as one of college basketball’s greatest coaches, but to his 98-year-old mother, he’s still just her son.
In a heartfelt interview, she expressed amazement at his success recalling how he was once just a regular kid who sore to fame. Now, as he stands among the coaching greats, she still finds it hard to believe how far he has come.

Unwavering Energy and a Legacy of Success
Despite all the accolades, Izzo remains the humble, hardworking individual his mother raised. She reminisced about his boundless energy, a trait she says he’s had all his life. While his career has taken him to the pinnacle of college basketball, his mother originally hoped he would become a teacher.
However, she acknowledges that he’s done exceptionally well in his chosen path.
Izzo’s relentless drive and passion for the game have been defining traits throughout his career. His mother, when asked where he gets his energy admitted she doesn’t know but assured, “It’s always there, that’s for sure” This tireless work ethic has propelled him to 25 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and a national championship in 2000.

Izzo’s late father, his mother believes, would have been ecstatic to see his son’s accomplishments. “He’d be proud of us,” she said with a smile, acknowledging the impact of their family values on Izzo’s career.
