Buzz Williams departs College Station after three NCAA Tournament appearances and a 120-73 record in charge of the Aggies.
What did Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts have to say about Williams’ decision?

Trev Alberts Issues Thanks to Buzz Williams
Williams became the next coach of the Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team on Tuesday. He is leaving Texas A&M after six seasons, posting a 120-73 record for a .622 winning percentage. His Aggies teams reached the last three NCAA Tournaments, advancing to the second round the past two years.
Alberts, the Texas A&M athletic director, issued a statement about Williams’ departure, which was first released by the independent Texas A&M fan website TexAgs.
“We would like to thank Buzz for his years of service heading up our men’s basketball program,” Alberts said in the press release. “We wish he and Corey and their family all the best moving forward. We are excited about the future of Aggie basketball, and we will find the right leader for our program.”

Alberts, the Aggies’ AD for just over a year, will look to replace Williams, a Texas native, as quickly as possible in this age of transfer portal madness.
In 2019, Williams arrived in College Station to take over for Billy Kennedy, who was fired after eight seasons. The Aggies went 56-44 in the SEC under Williams’ guidance.
His name has been bandied about for the Terrapins’ opening even when coach Kevin Willard was still technically in College Park. Now, he returns to the East Coast, where he was the coach of Virginia Tech from 2014-2018, going 100-69 (.592) and reaching the NCAA Tournament three times, including one appearance in the Sweet 16.
This is about the length of stay Terrapins fans should expect out of Williams, who signed a six-year contract. He led the Aggies for six years and the Hokies in Blacksburg for another five.

Before that, Williams came to prominence nationally at Marquette, where he led the Golden Eagles to five NCAA appearances, reaching the Sweet 16 three times and the Elite 8 once, during six years in Milwaukee.
