Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams has emerged as a candidate for Maryland’s head coaching position amid speculation that Kevin Willard could leave for Villanova.

Buzz Williams Linked to Maryland Job as Kevin Willard Eyes Villanova
Maryland’s early NCAA Tournament exit has fueled discussions about Willard’s future, while Williams’s postseason struggles continued after No. 4 seed Texas A&M fell 91-79 to No. 5 seed Michigan in the second round.
With eight seniors departing, the Aggies face a major roster overhaul. Williams’s name gaining traction in Maryland’s coaching search signals a possible shift in leadership.
The ongoing coaching carousel in college basketball has sparked speculation about Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams and Maryland’s potential head coaching vacancy. According to Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68, Williams is “trying to get involved” with the Maryland job if Kevin Willard departs for Villanova.
Willard remains at the center of these discussions. Since Villanova dismissed Kyle Neptune two weeks ago, Willard has been heavily linked to the position, particularly following Maryland’s Sweet 16 run, which ended in a loss to Florida.
While initial reports suggested Willard planned to take the Villanova job, no official announcement had been made as of Friday.
If Willard leaves, Maryland would need to secure a replacement, and Williams has reportedly expressed interest. He recently completed his sixth season at Texas A&M, where he has led the Aggies to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
However, despite a strong roster led by Wade Taylor IV—Texas A&M’s all-time leading scorer—the Aggies fell in the second round to Michigan, 91-79. Their struggles from beyond the arc and postseason disappointments have raised questions about Williams’s future in College Station.
Speculation intensified on social media, with bracketologist Nick Bateman predicting:
“Don’t be surprised if Maryland loses tonight, Kevin Willard is immediately announced as Villanova’s head coach, and Buzz Williams is immediately announced as Willard’s replacement at UMD.”
