Sean Miller has been hired as the next head coach of the Texas Longhorns. The news comes just shortly after the school announced that it will be parting ways with Rodney Terry following their First Four loss to the Xavier Musketeers.
Texas will be Miller’s fourth coaching job and his third different school. Texas, which made the Elite Eight in 2023 under Terry, has struggled the past two years. Texas faithful are hoping Miller can be the man to take the Longhorns back to national prominence.

Sean Miller Hired as Head Coach at Texas
After the news broke of Terry’s firing, the first name mentioned was Xavier head coach Sean Miller. A bit ironic, considering that Miller and Xavier were the team that knocked Texas out and arguably got Terry fired.
At 56, Miller has extensive experience as a head coach in college basketball. In his 20 years of coaching Xavier, Arizona, and Xavier again, he has a total record of 487-196. In his tenure as head coach, he has led his teams to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances.

In the tournament, Miller bolsters a 22-13 record. Although he doesn’t have any national championships or Final Four appearances, having experience winning games in March is exactly what Texas is looking for.
Miller found a lot of success at Arizona helping the team finish with a top 25 ranking in seven of his 12 seasons as the head coach, three times finishing in the top five. Miller was able to make seven NCAA Tournament appearances for the Wildcats.
In five of those seven seasons, Arizona ended as the Pac-12 regular-season champions, winning the conference tournament on three occasions. Miller has made it as far as the Elite Eight in March Madness; he did it in back-to-back years in 2014 and 2015.
What is attractive about Texas as a coaching job is the resources that come with it, especially in today’s NIL world. Miller will have a lot of capital to sign recruits or bring in transfers.
Even without NIL, Miller was always able to recruit top prospects to come and play for him. At Arizona, Miller was able to persuade players such as Derrick Williams, Nick Johnson, T.J. McConnell, and Deandre Ayton, all of whom made an impact for his teams in March. Ayton would go on to be the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

The resources available at Texas will only enhance his already masterful recruiting. Miller’s ability to turn around programs will need to be better than ever in Austin, as Texas recently joined the SEC, which was arguably the best conference in college basketball this season.
