According to On3’s Joe Tipton, Sommerville’s agent, Ryan Murphy, has confirmed this news. He stated on his X that programs such as Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee, Washington, Cincinnati, Butler, Oklahoma State, USC, and Texas A&M have all reached out regarding his transfer.

On3 ranks Sommerville as the No. 77 overall player and the No. 11 center in the transfer portal. Given the growing demand for versatile big men in today’s game, his ability to contribute on both ends of the floor.

Michigan, in particular, is actively seeking a strong post player since it will lose graduate Vladislav Goldin and likely junior forward/center Danny Wolf after the current season. With the Wolverines currently competing in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 against Auburn, their coaching staff wants to secure him.

Sommerville’s freshman campaign at Rutgers showcased flashes of brilliance. He appeared in 32 games and made 15 starts, averaging 8.2 points and 4.1 rebounds for the 15-17 Scarlet Knights during the 2024-25 season.

Sommerville’s Efficiency and Impact on the Floor

Statistically, Sommerville demonstrated efficiency in key areas. He connected on 52.7% of his 2-point field goal attempts. With that, he also converted 70% of his shots at the rim, placing him in the 71st percentile nationally.

However, his perimeter shooting remains a work in progress, especially because he attempted only nine 3-pointers throughout the season, making just one. Despite this, his free-throw shooting stood out, as he knocked down an impressive 86.3% from the charity stripe.

Sommerville also displayed defensive versatility, contributing 18 blocks and 13 steals throughout the season. He was a physical presence inside, drawing an average of 4.5 fouls per 40 minutes, which helped him get to the free-throw line consistently.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Sommerville’s transfer process is the firsthand experience Michigan had in scouting him during the season. He played against the Wolverines twice, allowing head coach Dusty May to evaluate his skill set up close.

In the first meeting at Jersey Mike’s Arena, Sommerville contributed six points, five rebounds, and two assists.

However, it was his performance in Ann Arbor that truly turned heads. In that matchup, he posted a season-high 17 points on 5 of 10 shooting while going a perfect 7 of 7 from the free-throw line. He also added three rebounds, one assist, and one steal, showcasing his ability to step up against high-level competition.
