Although they share a last name and have strong ties to the University of North Carolina (UNC), they are unrelated. RJ Davis’s father is Robert Davis, a former basketball player at Mercy College. No credible sources or public records indicate any familial connection between RJ and Hubert Davis.
In the 2024-25 season, RJ Davis continued his strong performance, averaging 17.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. He also set a UNC single-season record with 113 three-pointers, averaging 2.1 threes per game.
Since becoming UNC’s head coach in 2021, Huber Davis has guided the team to a 78-31 record, an ACC title in 2024, and a national runner-up finish in 2022, maintaining a .716 winning percentage.
Hubert Davis Reflects on First Seeing RJ Davis Play
UNC head coach Davis vividly recalls the first time he watched his now star guard play. Hubert attended a Nike AAU event in Atlanta as an assistant coach under Roy Williams. Opting to scout multiple games instead of focusing on one, Hubert returned to the same court.
“I walked around all the 12 courts, and I just kept turning around. … I found myself at that court almost the whole time,” Davis told media personnel

“I came back to Coach Williams and was like, ‘There’s this kid named RJ Davis that’s pretty good. I think we need to take a look at him. He just plays the right way and looks like a pretty good kid. I love the way that he interacts with his coaches and his teammates.”
Five years later, Davis will play his ACC-record 170th game in UNC’s regular-season finale against No. 2 Duke.
