Wofford’s granny-style free throws are coming to an NCAA tournament near you. The Wofford Terriers (19-15, 10-8) cut down the nets after winning the Southern Conference last night at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina. Part of the win? Three points from the foul line from fifth-year senior center Kyler Filewich.

Filewich shot 3-of-7 from the line in the Terriers’ 92-85 victory over the Furman Paladins (25-9, 11-7), helping propel Wofford into the NCAA tournament. The fifth-year senior went 5-17 granny-style free throw shots throughout the tournament, but the fans loved it all the same.

Filewich jumped into the spotlight in February. His special shooting style earned him six points in ten attempts at the line against Samford, and raucous cheers came with every make.
This year, the fifth-year senior shot 31.8% from the line, the second worst of his college career. He averaged 3.9 free throw attempts, sinking just 1.2 of them per game. Filewich shot 46% from the line his freshman year, 50% his sophomore year, 40.7% his junior year and 31.6% his senior year.
Filewich was the big man in Wofford’s unexpected run to the NCAA tournament. The Terriers finished the Southern Conference schedule with only ten wins, putting them as the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament.
The Terriers had an easier run than expected in cutting down the nets, dodging both the No. 1 Chattanooga Mocs (24-9, 15-3) and the No. 2 UNC Greensboro Spartans (20-12, 13-5). Instead, they faced the No. 7 VMI Keydets (15-19, 7-11) and No. 5 Furman.
The Terriers were swept by the Mocs this season and split their series with the Spartans.

ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi now projects Wofford as a No. 15 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Tigers are expected to face the No. 2 seed Alabama Crimson Tide (24-7, 13-5) in the first round in what is projected to be the No. 1 seed Houston Cougars’ (27-4, 19-1) Midwest Region.
