‘I Only Need 5′ — John Calipari Unconcerned With Arkansas’ Depth After Injuries

March Madness is all about resilience and coaching genius. For Arkansas head coach John Calipari, the road to success in this year’s tournament is already filled with obstacles. The Razorbacks will enter their first-round matchup against Kansas without their leading scorer, Adou Thiero, who remains sidelined with a knee injury.

However, there’s a glimmer of hope—freshman point guard Boogie Fland is set to make his long-awaited return after missing nearly two months due to a thumb injury.

John Calipari Faces Roster Challenges as Arkansas Prepares for NCAA Tournament Clash

Calipari, a veteran of 24 NCAA Tournament appearances, is no stranger to handling adversity on the biggest stage. With depth concerns looming, all eyes are on his strategic adjustments as Arkansas prepares to battle Kansas on Thursday.

During the SEC Tournament, Calipari only played seven players, sparking speculation about whether the Razorbacks have enough depth to survive multiple rounds in March Madness.

When asked about his limited lineup during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, the Arkansas head coach didn’t mince words.

“Don’t tell anybody, but I only need five. That’s all,” Calipari said.

“So what’ll happen is, if a couple of guys aren’t playing well, they’ll just play less.”

One of the biggest X-factors in Arkansas’ first-round matchup will be the return of Boogie Fland. The freshman point guard hasn’t played since January 18 due to a thumb injury.

However, before getting sidelined, he was one of the team’s most dynamic playmakers. Fland averaged 15.1 points and 5.7 assists per game, providing Arkansas with a much-needed scoring threat and floor general.

His return certainly gives the Razorbacks an extra weapon, but the main question remains—how effective can he be after such a long absence? Calipari himself wasn’t overly optimistic when discussing Fland’s potential minutes during Selection Sunday.

“I’m not even sure he’ll reach the 15-minute mark,” the coach admitted.

Even if Fland is on a limited workload, his presence could open up new offensive opportunities for Arkansas. The Razorbacks have had to adjust their playing style due to injuries, yet they still managed to win four of their last five games before the SEC Tournament.

If Fland can contribute in any capacity, it might provide Arkansas with the boost it needs to compete at a high level against Kansas.

Calipari’s Approach to NCAA Tournament Success

John Calipari has long been regarded as one of college basketball’s premier coaches, with six Final Four appearances and a national championship on his resume. Calipari, known for his straightforward coaching philosophy, explained his mindset heading into the tournament.

“At this time of the year, you’re not worried about ego or anything else,” he said. “It is survive and advance. You’re playing in a tournament of four teams. We’re here in Providence. A four-team tournament. If you can win this, you go to another four-team tournament.”

Instead of focusing on winning six games to claim a national title, Calipari breaks the tournament down into manageable steps. This allowed his players to focus on one game at a time. Now the tip-off is set for 6:10 p.m. CT in Providence today, where the Razorbacks will put Calipari’s game plan to the test.
