North Texas is making a major move in its basketball program, as the Mean Green are set to hire Cleveland State’s Daniyal Robinson as their next head coach. A Proven Winner at Cleveland State

Daniyal Robinson brings a strong track record to North Texas. In his three seasons at Cleveland State, he compiled an impressive 65-42 record (.607), including a 23-13 campaign this past season that culminated in an appearance in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) title game. Though the Vikings fell short in the championship against Illinois State, Robinson’s ability to lead his team deep into the postseason demonstrates his coaching acumen.

During his first season with Cleveland State in 2022-23, Robinson guided the Vikings to a 21-14 record with a 14-6 mark in Horizon League play. His team finished third in the conference standings, marking the program’s third consecutive 20-win season.

    A Strong Coaching Pedigree

Before taking over at Cleveland State, Robinson created a reputation as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation. He had two separate moments at Iowa State, where he played a crucial role in the Cyclones’ success. During his tenure, Iowa State won two Big 12 Tournaments and made four NCAA Tournament appearances, including two Sweet 16 runs in 2016 and 2021.

Robinson also held assistant coaching positions at Loyola Chicago, Houston, Illinois State, and his alma mater, Arkansas-Little Rock. At Loyola Chicago, he helped lead the Ramblers to 24 wins and a CBI championship in 2014-15. His ability to develop talent was evident at Iowa State, where he worked with three future NBA players, including All-American Craig Brackins, who was selected 21st overall in the 2010 NBA Draft.

What Robinson Brings to North Texas

North Texas is currently preparing for its National Invitation Tournament (NIT) semifinal matchup on Tuesday, but the future is already taking shape with Robinson’s hiring. His defensive-minded approach and ability to develop players will be a key asset for the Mean Green as they transition into a new era.

The Mean Green have established themselves as a mid-major powerhouse in recent years, and Robinson will be tasked with sustaining that momentum in the AAC. His experience coaching at multiple levels, including in Power Five conferences, makes him well-suited to guide UNT to continued success.

A Bright Future for UNT Basketball

With Robinson at the helm, North Texas is positioned for a promising future. His track record of winning, player development, and postseason success suggests that UNT fans can expect a competitive team in the coming years.
