Kevin Willard’s Coaching Record: A Look at His Career Success and Achievements

The Maryland Terrapins are on their way to the Sweet 16, thanks to a game-winning shot by freshman Derik Queen against Colorado State. However, this program would not be where it is today without the coaching efforts of head coach Kevin Willard.

    Kevin Willard’s Accomplishments at Maryland

Since coming over from Seton Hall, Willard has had some strong seasons in College Park.

In his first season with the program back in 2022-2023, he guided the school to a 22-win season and an appearance in the Round of 32.

After missing the NCAA Tournament last season, Willard has responded in a big way, winning 27 games so far.

Currently a No. 4 seed, the Terps will play the top-seeded Florida Gators in San Francisco on Thursday night.

If he can find a way to pull off the major upset, he could have a home at Maryland for a long, long time.

Kevin Willard’s Accomplishments Before His Arrival at Maryland

What earned Willard the job with the Terps was his long run with the Seton Hall Pirates.

The New York native led the Pirates to seven 20-win seasons and what would have been six NCAA Tournaments in 12 seasons at the helm (the 2020 NCAA Tournament was canceled due to COVID-19).

The Pirates would end up winning a regular-season Big East title (2020), along with a Big East Tournament title (2016). Before earning the Seton Hall gig, Willard was the head coach at Iona for three years (2007-2010).

After having two losing seasons to start his tenure there, he was able to win 21 games overall and post a 12-6 conference record.

The 49-year-old was one of legendary head coach Rick Pitino’s assistants with both the Boston Celtics (1997-2001) and the Louisville Cardinals (2001-2007). He also played college basketball at both Western Kentucky and Pittsburgh.

So, it is safe to say that Willard’s knowledge of the college game goes back over three decades and has helped prepare him for what he is doing right now. All eyes will be on the Chase Center on Thursday night when Willard and the Terps prepare to face off against an elite Florida Gators team in the Bay Area.
