Jevon Porter Becomes the Latest Porter Brother at Mizzou

Porter is a 6’11″ forward born in Columbia, Missouri, and initially committed to Pepperdine. He played his first two years at Pepperdine, averaging 12.1 points his freshman year and 16.2 points per game his sophomore year.

Jevon Porter is the brother of NBA champion Michael Porter Jr. and NBA center Jontay Porter. Michael and Jontay Porter both played at the University of Missouri.

Michael Porter Jr. now plays for the Nuggets as a wingman to 3-time MVP Nikola Jokic, and Jontay Porter played for the Raptors in the ’23-’24 season, averaging 4.4 points per game in 14 minutes per contest.

Jevon Porter will join his dad, Michael Porter Sr., at the University of Missouri. Porter Sr. has been the Tigers’ Director of Player Development for the last three seasons. The Tigers have been a home for the Porter family as Jevon Porter becomes the fifth sibling to play for the Tigers.

Porter played his high school basketball at Tolton High School, which is just minutes away from the Missouri arena. The 6’11 forward almost decided to be a Tiger last season when he entered the transfer portal but decided to go to Loyola Marymount.

At 12.1 points per game, Porter was the second leading scorer on his team, and he was second in rebounds, averaging 7.2 a game during his sophomore year before transferring to Loyola Marymount.

Part of the reason Porter chose to attend Loyola Marymount is because his godfather, Lorenzo Romar, was the coach of the Lions.

Porter joins a Missouri Tigers team that finished sixth in the SEC last year but was missing talent at the forward position.

The Tigers only have three players over 6’10”, and none have played significant minutes for the team. Porter has a chance to come in and make an instant impact for the Tigers.

The talent that Porter has is not the question. He is an athletic forward with a quick first step for his size. He can put the ball on the floor, improving his playmaking ability. He started his freshman year averaging less than one assist.

Last year for the Lions, he averaged close to two assists per game.

Though his playmaking ability is improving, his efficiency has decreased. His true shooting percentage has dipped every year he has been in college. In his freshman year, it was 56.7%, but it was only 49.2% last year.

Coach of Missouri, Dennis Gates, took a step in the right direction for the Tigers. After coming off an 8-24 record in the 23-24 season,

Missouri was 22-12 last year. Porter and the 79th recruit in the ESPN Top 100, Nick Randall, should add some much-needed size in the frontcourt for Missouri to go along with guards Mark Mitchell and Anthony Robinson.

Porter is going home. He gets to play for his hometown team and make a difference next year for the Missouri Tigers.
