Jake Diebler’s Ohio State Buckeyes are facing a crucial stretch, battling inconsistency and injuries as they fight for a spot in the NCAA Tournament. A tough loss to Nebraska followed by an earlier win against Maryland has put the Buckeyes in a precarious position.
With Devin Royal’s injury and questions surrounding their ability to perform under pressure, the head coach emphasized resilience and teamwork.

Jake Diebler’s Emphasis on Toughness and Unity
The Buckeyes’ inconsistentness has fueled speculation about their tournament chances. They have the talent to secure a spot in March Madness. However, their inability to maintain steady performances has put them in the bubble. As the season nears its end, Ohio State must find stability to strengthen its resume.
Diebler remains focused on fostering a strong team dynamic. In a video posted by Hoop Herald, he praised his team’s determination, stating:
“I’m certainly so thankful for these two, but I just want you to understand how connected and tough this group is. We have really preached that from day one, and I thought that was on full display tonight.”

He also added:
“Maybe we lacked a little bit of that early, but it took everything we had from a toughness and a togetherness to come back and win this game against a really good team who’s arguably playing some of the best basketball in the league right now.”
Diebler provided an update on Royal’s injury during his Monday press conference, stating that he planned to check on the team’s health after addressing the media. In another interview, he said:
“It’s too early to tell, you know, right now. It’s just too early to tell but I think certainly optimistic and hopeful and prayerful that, you know, he’ll be able to go,” said Diebler. “It’ll be kind of a day-to-day thing right now.”
Royal, the Buckeyes’ second-leading scorer and top rebounder, sustained a lower right leg injury in the first half of the Nebraska game, in which Ohio State lost 79-71. Although he briefly returned, his minutes were limited, and he was later seen in a boot. This raised concerns about his availability for the upcoming game against Michigan.
Ohio State’s Road to the NCAA Tournament
With March Madness approaching, the Buckeyes face mounting pressure. Their upcoming matchup against Michigan is a must-win to boost their tournament chances. A strong finish to the season is essential, but any further setbacks could cost them a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to basketball concerns, Ohio State’s football program has also made headlines. Head coach Ryan Day recently secured a major contract extension, but his decision to rely on a young coaching staff has sparked debate. While the move could inject fresh energy into the program, it also brings uncertainty as the team navigates a new direction.
For now, Ohio State basketball remains the focal point. The Buckeyes must prove their ability to perform consistently and overcome setbacks if they hope to secure a tournament bid. If Royal can return at full strength and the team can execute under pressure, their postseason aspirations may still be within reach.
