Welcome home, coach! The Indiana Hoosiers have found their new coach in Darian DeVries. He previously coached at Drake from 2018-2024 and had a short one-year stint at West Virginia during the 2024-2025 season.

Coach Darian DeVries Is Heading to Bloomington After Just One Season in Morgantown
After receiving interest from Iowa, Coach DeVries quickly decided to join Indiana as their new head coach. He will succeed coach Mike Woodson, who recently announced his retirement.

DeVries is no stranger to winning. During his six years at Drake, he won 20-plus games each season and took the Bulldogs to the dance three times. However, during his lone season at West Virginia, the Mountaineers surprisingly missed the tournament.
West Virginia finished this past season with a 19-13 record. Many experts believed DeVries’ team was good enough to make the tournament and were shocked by the committee’s decision to leave them out.
This left the door wide open for Indiana. With names like Drake University’s Ben McCollum in the mix, Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson immediately shifted gears to DeVries, knowing they had to move quickly:
“We went into this coaching search with some very specific things we were looking for in our next head coach, and Darian emerged as someone who, on paper, met and often exceeded our criteria.”
Coach DeVries will look to bring Indiana back to glory and end their 38-year championship drought.
Expectations for Darian DeVries in Bloomington
The Hoosiers haven’t won a national championship since 1987. During the 38-year drought, they’ve had six different coaches, have made the tournament eight times, and have only won three Big Ten titles.
Now, DeVries will become Indiana’s 31st coach to lead the program. DeVries began his head coaching career as an assistant for 17 seasons at Creighton under Dana Altman and Greg McDermott. He was fortunate to coach his son, Tucker, during his tenure at Drake.
As the star of the team in 2023 and 2024, Tucker was named Missouri Valley Player of the Year in both seasons. Now a redshirt due to a shoulder injury, he could follow his father to Indiana.
DeVries knows the expectations of the position and the history that comes along with it:
“This is unquestionably one of the top jobs in America — As someone who grew up in the Midwest loving the game of basketball, I’ve always admired the IU basketball program for its championship-level success, tradition, and fan support. — I’m excited for this opportunity and am ready to work relentlessly to assemble a staff and a roster that competes for championships.”

Indiana has won five national championships, three under legendary coach Bob Knight in 1976, 1981, and 1987. The 76′ team remains the last undefeated NCAA men’s champion. Time will tell is DeVries has what it takes to bring glory back to Bloomington.
