Grant Nelson Injury Update: Will Alabama’s Star Forward Play in March Madness?

Nelson walked away from the SEC semifinal on March 15, 2025, with 3:40 left in the first half due to a left leg injury. He attempted to continue playing but was clearly in discomfort; thus, he did not return for the second half.

Coach Nate Oats stated after the game that, while the injury does not appear to involve the ACL, additional evaluation is required.

Following the initial injury, Nelson consulted a knee specialist on March 17. Coach Oats provided an update, stating, “We dodged one. It wasn’t anything too serious with his knee, but he will for sure be questionable for that first game on Friday.”

Oats stated that the trainers had labeled Nelson’s condition as “day-to-day,” which adds to the uncertainty around his availability. Grant wants to play. “He’s a competitor,” Oats said, recognizing Nelson’s propel to return to the floor.

The coach explained that Nelson had only recently begun basketball skill drills and had not participated in any live practices ahead of Friday’s game.

“Just yesterday, he started doing basketball skill workouts,” Oats said during a press conference. “It’ll end up being a game-time decision based on what he feels like in the morning, but if he does end up playing, he won’t have practiced anything live up until then.”

Nelson’s participation is heavily dependent on how he responds to his recovery overnight.

As of March 20, Nelson described his situation as a “game-time decision,” expressing his willingness to participate, indicating he can contribute successfully while risking further injuries.

Nelson has made major contributions this season, with an average of 11.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game. His likely absence could have an impact on Alabama’s play, particularly in rebounding and inside defense.

The team is planning for various situations, with Coach Oats emphasizing the value of others stepping up if Nelson is sidelined.

Alabama will take on Robert Morris in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on March 21, 2025. Nelson’s participation is still unknown, and his condition will most likely be determined during the game itself. Fans and commentators are both eagerly anticipating updates as the game approaches.
