Jon Scheyer Says Flagg’s Attitude is ‘Contagious’

Cooper Flagg, Duke’s star wing, loaded the stat sheet in his team’s dominant win over Stanford on February 15. He had 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists while shooting 7-of-13 from the court.

When third-year head coach Scheyer discussed his team’s lack of selfishness, he explained that it all begins with Flagg.

“When your best player does not care about statistics, I think everybody else, how can you care about statistics?” Scheyer said. “Cooper does not care. He cares about winning, and I think that’s contagious.”

Scheyer also stated that his goal each offseason is to build a team with a sense of “complete unselfishness,” as the current Blue Devils team exhibits.

Flagg’s commitment to the team was apparent during a recent game against Pittsburgh. Following early foul trouble, he came back with fresh energy, producing a standout performance that included a highlight-reel dunk.

Scheyer praised his persistence, saying, “He was pissed at himself for the second foul…it just got him going.”

The freshman’s performance against California highlighted his ability to rebound. He led the team with 27 points.

Scheyer praised his leadership, adding, “[Cooper Flagg’s] response, he was just sharp, under control, competitive, aggressive. He carried us throughout with his play.”

Scheyer believes Flagg’s passion and team-oriented approach distinguishes him.

“When we step on the floor, we have the best player in the country,” the coach stated.

Flagg’s commitment to team achievement above personal achievement represents the values that Scheyer hopes to foster at Duke. Flagg’s selfless play and leadership will be key in the Blue Devils’ journey to championship success as the season progresses.
