In the Sweet 16, Kevin Young’s BYU met Alabama, the No. 2 seed. Despite a strong effort, Alabama defeated the Cougars 113-88, breaking a March Madness record with 25 three-pointers. BYU’s Richie Saunders led the team with 25 points, but the Cougars couldn’t match Alabama’s historic shooting performance.
Despite the terrible ending, it was a memorable season for BYU basketball. In Kevin Young’s first season as head coach, the team made its first Sweet 16 appearance in 14 years.
