As Selection Sunday quickly approaches, so does the March Madness tournament. While there have been many classic moments on the court, there have also been many funny moments off the court, including Dennis Clifford’s ACC Tournament Quote.
In the press conference after Boston College was eliminated from the ACC Tournament, Clifford was asked what his best memory of playing college basketball was. To which Clifford responded with one of the most legendary quotes still to this day: ” Going out to eat.”

Dennis Clifford’s ACC Tournament Quote Still Has Fans Laughing
Clifford’s quotes still have fans laughing as much now as they did back then—perhaps even more now, as Boston College fans were certainly not laughing back then. After being blown out mercilessly by Florida State in the first round, Boston College was sent home as quickly as it entered the ACC Tournament.

Boston College finished their season with just seven wins and 25 losses. Even worse, they weren’t able to pick up a conference win at all, losing all 19 of their conference games. To make matters worse, Boston College entered the history books as that was the first time in history a team went winless in college play.
There have been many bad college teams in history, but perhaps none were worse than the 2015-16 Boston College Eagles. While this quote was some light-hearted humor from Clifford during what was sure to be a depressing time, his face told a different story as he put his head down and got choked up before answering.
The most important thing for Clifford was meeting and becoming close with his teammates. If his answer did anything, it showed that basketball, wasn’t a major part of a college life he enjoyed. A big reason this could be is because the Eagles were never over .500 for as long as Clifford played there.
After going undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft, Clifford joined the Santa Cruz Warriors of the NBA Developmental League. He spent a lot of time playing overseas, including playing for the Rajawali Medan of the Indonesian Basketball League, where he currently plays.

His answer was certainly not a testament to the Boston College basketball team, whether it be coaches, assistants, or more. However, it was one of honesty and perhaps one of the most legendary press conference moments in March history. What makes this even funnier is how honest college players are and not having that media training that a pro athlete could have.
