After just one season in Wisconsin, guard Daniel Freitag announced he was entering the transfer portal Monday. The Bloomington, MN native, who committed to Wisconsin over offers from Minnesota, Notre Dame, Baylor, and Virginia, only saw the court in 14 games, averaging just two minutes of playing time in garbage time situations.
The four-star recruit, who scored his only points in the waning moments of the Badgers’ 116-85 win over Iowa, will now look for more playing time elsewhere. Here are five potential transfer portal landing spots for Freitag.

Minnesota Golden Gophers
Sometimes, the obvious choice is the one right in front of you. The Minnesota native returning home would be a perfect fit for a team losing a plethora of guards, including starters Lu’Cye Patterson, Mike Mitchell Jr., and Femi Odukale (yes, the Gophers started three last year).
With new head coach Niko Medved at the helm, Freitag could be in the vision for a new-look Minnesota team.
Nebraska Cornhuskers
The Cornhuskers recruited Freitag out of high school and have a history of poaching Wisconsin castaways, scoring guard Connor Essegian in the portal last year. Head coach Fred Hoiberg’s team is losing starters Brice Williams and Rollie Worster this offseason and will be looking to revamp after a 12th-place finish in the Big Ten.
Baylor Bears
Head coach Scott Drew and the Bears made a strong push for Freitag out of high school, scoring an official visit in Aug. 2023.
Now, with superstar guard VJ Edgecombe likely headed for the 2025 NBA Draft, Jayden Nunn and Jeremy Roach out of eligibility, and Langston Love jumping in the portal, they have a hole to fill alongside starter Jalen Celestine. While it could be a long shot, Drew could look toward Freitag to play meaningful minutes on a contending team.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights
The Scarlet Knights got cleaned out this spring, with star guard Dylan Harper announcing his entry to the NBA Draft, Ace Bailey expected to follow suit, starter Jeremiah Williams hitting the portal, and Tyson Acuff and PJ Hayes IV finishing off their eligibility. That leaves plenty of room for Freitag.

What was once a crowded guard room on head coach Steve Pikiell’s team is now in shreds, with only two players — junior Jordan Derkack and sophomore Jamichael Davis — having played any meaningful minutes in the backcourt last year.
Iowa Hawkeyes
The Hawkeyes lost some players to the portal following the dismissal of former coach Fran McCaffery, but the future now looks bright with ex-Drake head coach Ben McCollum at the helm.
The Hawkeyes, who lost guards Josh Dix and Brock Harding to the portal and Drew Thelwell to eligibility while gaining Drake’s Bennett Stirtz, will certainly be looking for more help in the frontcourt — currently only manning freshman Jacob Koch and junior Carter Kingsbury, neither of whom averaged even two points per game last year.
