    Laettner made a significant impact at Duke from 1988 to 1992. He appeared in an NCAA record 148 games, scoring 16.6 points and grabbing 7.8 rebounds per game.

    His senior year was especially impressive. His averages of 21.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game won him National Player of the Year accolades.

    The Shot That Defined an Era

    Among Laettner’s multiple clutch efforts, one stands out: his game-winning shot against Kentucky in the 1992 East Regional Final. With Duke losing 103-102 in overtime with barely 2.1 seconds left, Grant Hill made a full-court pass to Laettner.

    Positioned at the free-throw line, Laettner faked right, dribbled once, turned left, and unleashed a fadeaway jumper that struck the bottom of the net as time expired, giving Duke a 104-103 victory.

    This legendary moment, called “The Shot,” is widely recognized as one of the most iconic in NCAA tournament history. Laettner’s exquisite performance in that game hitting all ten field goals and ten free throws confirmed his reputation for excelling under pressure.

    Laettner’s collegiate performances have earned him a spot among the top basketball players. He has the NCAA tournament records for most points scored (407), free throws made (142), and games played (23).
