The No. 1 Duke Blue Devils were truly tested in that instant classic during the Sweet 16 against St. John’s, and one man who had been instrumental in that win was guard Caleb Foster. He had previously been injured in his foot and immediately got surgery, with many believing he was already out for the season. However, for the Sweet 16 showdown against St. John’s, he finally returned.
As Duke prepares for their Elite Eight showdown against UConn, the question now is, will Caleb Foster be playing again? The Blue Devils have now released their availability report for the game, and it showed that Foster will be questionable for that game despite only returning during the previous game.
This means that there is a possibility that Jon Scheyer would not be letting him play against the Huskies, possibly opting to rest that injured foot. This shows that the coaching staff may still have some concerns about that recently-repaired foot, which he dislocated during the ACC Tournament.
This could be bad for the Blue Devils, as the Huskies are expected to have a fully healthy rotation coming into the game. Duke will also be missing center Ifeanyi Ufochukwu, who is out for the season for undisclosed reasons. As for Caleb Foster, Jon Scheyer may make his participation a game-time decision, as he may not be fully confident about that foot of his.
In that return game against the Red Storm, Foster dropped 11 points, showing that even though he had just had foot surgery, it did not bother him as much as people thought.
Caleb Foster Surgery: Taking A Look At Duke Star’s Injury History
Caleb Foster had injured his foot before in 2024, though he was still a backup point guard back then. It did hurt Duke’s rotation, but he soon came back and went on to become one of the Blue Devils’ veteran leaders.
He injured his foot again earlier this month, and it required surgery. He was supposed to be out indefinitely, but returned for that game against St. John’s.
“I just poured everything into my teammates,” he said after the game. “They battled and I watched them battle. I tried to do whatever I could do to help (us) win. This was a tough game. Credit to St. John’s, they’re a really good opponent.”
The big question now is whether or not Scheyer will allow him to return, as reports had indicated that he really wanted to play despite the injury.
