Bill Self Shuts Down Retirement Rumors: ‘No Way’ Kansas Coach Calls It Quits

While the Kansas Jayhawks prepare for another run in March, there are possible rumors swirling around that head coach Bill Self could retire. However, Self recently put those rumors to bed.

Bill Self Says No to Retirement

According to nj.com, the legendary head coach will not be calling it quits after he texted “no” to NJ Advance Media this week.

The 62-year-old is one of the best head coaches in the history of college basketball and has accomplished all there is to accomplish at his level.

He has won two national titles (2008, 2022), made four Final Fours, won eight Big 12 Tournaments, and been named the AP Coach of the Year twice. Additionally, he was already inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame back in 2017.

In his 22 seasons coaching in Lawrence, Self has miraculously lost just 16 games at home.

Also, the Jayhawks have never missed the NCAA Tournament when a full season has been played (the 2020 NCAA Tournament was canceled due to COVID-19).

The Jayhawks’ Ceiling Ahead of March

Simply put, this current Kansas team might actually be the worst one that Self has ever had. It is just one conference loss away from matching the most conference losses that a Self-led team has had at Kansas.

Sitting in sixth place in the Big 12 at 10-7 (19-9 overall), the Jayhawks are staring up at teams such as Houston, Arizona, Texas Tech, Iowa State, and BYU.

Now, you might not want to face Kansas as a lower-seeded team in any tournament, seeing as that could be a dangerous matchup with All-American center Hunter Dickinson being the team’s best player and one of the best in the country.

If you can limit is touches in the paint, your chances of winning will go up exponentially.

Teams are going to have to do that if they hope to prevent the Jayhawks from going on another magical run in March. Still, the Jayhawks are just 4-7 on the road, which is a significant stat.

Self’s team will have to improve its play away from Allen Fieldhouse if it hopes to contend for both a Big 12 and NCAA Tournament title.
