BYU signee AJ Dybantsa is not just focused on basketball; he has a strong passion for music as well. On Tuesday, Feb. 4, he used his Instagram story to highlight the tracklist from Detroit rapper Luhh Dyl’s latest album, showing his support for the rising artist.
AJ Dybantsa’s Music Taste
Luhh Dyl had built a reputation in hip-hop with his unique cart music style. He has frequently posted videos of himself riding through stores in shopping carts while debuting tracks. His 2023 album, “Cart Music,” stayed true to this branding.
His latest mixtape, “Intrude,” was scheduled for release on Feb. 5 and included collaborations with artists such as Tee Grizzley, Veeze, Sada Baby, and Flint’s Lil Lik. To build excitement, he released the single “F 12” in January, featuring Tee Grizzley.
Dybantsa had supported Luhh Dyl before. In November, he shared a post promoting the artist’s song Slow Down featuring Veeze, proving his consistent appreciation for Dyl’s work. His love for music extended beyond just reposting songs.
In an October interview with The Players’ Tribune, Dybantsa revealed that pop music helped him stay focused before games. He also shared that the one artist he wanted courtside at his games was five-time Grammy winner Drake.
Dybantsa’s NBA Future and Victor Wembanyama’s Influence
Victor Wembanyama has left a mark on the NBA in his second season, inspiring young players aiming to reach his level, including Dybantsa.
The BYU commit had traveled to Paris to watch Wembanyama play in the NBA Global Games and was left impressed by his performance. Dybantsa told Brian Windhorst of ESPN:
“I think Victor is just ridiculous; the things he does are just crazy. I just think we would’ve been a crazy duo. Now, the odds of that happening are very slim. But I mean, it was just a thought that came up in my mind when he got drafted. But you never know.”

Dybantsa remained a projected top pick, but his dream of teaming up with Wembanyama had become unrealistic. Before acquiring De’Aaron Fox, the Spurs appeared likely to finish in the lottery, increasing the chances of drafting a player like Dybantsa.
However, their situation changed after the trade. Fox, who won the NBA’s inaugural Clutch Player of the Year award in 2023, had continued to refine his game. His defensive improvements made him a more complete player, leading the league with 2.0 steals per game last season.
With Fox and Wembanyama anchoring the team, the Spurs were no longer in a position to land Dybantsa through the draft. Their young core showed significant growth, making a high lottery pick unlikely.
