Is Lane Kiffin Coaching the Texas Bowl? All We Know About LSU HC’s Plans for Saturday Showdown

Lane Kiffin has had an eventful season so far. He took the Ole Miss Rebels to one of their most dominant runs, won the Egg Bowl with them, and days later, parted ways with the program to join the LSU Tigers.

Since joining the Tigers, Kiffin has been on a mission to reshape the program by hiring new coaches, including those he brought with him from Oxford. Before Kiffin, Brian Kelly used to be the head coach of the Tigers.

In the process of reshaping the program, Kiffin has stayed away from the head coaching duties for now. That role is currently being handled by Frank Wilson. But the Tigers have an important Bowl game coming up, the Texas Bowl against the Houston Cougars.

So, will Kiffin coach the Tigers during the Bowl game? The answer is no. Kiffin wouldn’t be on the sidelines as a head coach against the Cougars, and Wilson will lead the team once again. Interestingly, this will be his last game with the Tigers.

After the Texas Bowl, Wilson will join the Ole Miss Rebels staff, being led by their new head coach, Pete Golding. Even though he hasn’t publicly acknowledged the move yet, its well known through multiple reports.

The reason why Wilson has stayed away from addressing the Ole Miss news is that he wants to focus only on the last stretch of his run with the Tigers.

“We just want to finish what we started,” Wilson said. “With this football team, with the team of 2025. Give them our undivided attention before transition happens.

He was previously an assistant at Ole Miss from 2005 to 2007, so this wouldn’t be an unfamiliar territory for him.

Lane Kiffin Wanted to Coach the Rebels During Playoff

Kiffin built one of the strongest rosters in the program’s history and led them to one of their most successful seasons. Even though there were rumors from the beginning of the season, Kiffin maintained that he was happy in Oxford.

Then LSU came in and took him away with a lucrative offer. Despite the move, Kiffin wanted to be with the team during playoff. However, the athletic director didn’t agree, and he had to leave before the playoffs.

“I was hoping to complete a historic six-season run with this year’s team by leading Ole Miss through the playoffs,” Kiffin wrote in his STATEMENT. “My request to do so was denied by Keith Carter despite the team also asking him to allow me to keep coaching them so they could better maintain their high level of performance.”

With that, the Egg Bowl win remained his last game with the Ole Miss Rebels.
