Kyle Whittingham is rumored to be the next head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. Although a deal not finalized yet, reports suggest that the program has zeroed in on Whittingham, and the paperwork might be done soon.
Whittingham, if he joins Michigan, will have a mammoth task ahead. The program has suffered a lot in the last few months with the Sherrone Moore drama that has involved getting fired for cause, an affair with a staff member, getting arrested, and more.
Caroline Fenton of Yahoo Sports recently weighed in on whether Whittingham is the perfect fit for Michigan or not. In her opinion, the 66-year-old is exactly what the Michigan Wolverines need right now as a program.
“I love this,” Fenton said. “I didn’t think Kyle Whittingham was even an option for this job, but I think that this might be the best name in the market.”
Fenton referred to Whittingham’s two-decade-long run as a head coach with the Utah Utes as an example of how great he is to work with. Whittingham also brings stability and a winning mentality that Michigan needs.
“He’s been in Utah for 21 years, you’ve never heard of a single scandal or any sort of bad PR that’s come out of Utah, and he has made Utah a perennial contender for so many years in the PAC-12. Utah has won 10 games consistently under Kyle Whittingham,” she added.
As per a recent report by Pete Thamel and Dan Wetzel of ESPN, an offer with Whittingham will be presented to top university officials this Friday. If they get a positive response, Whittingham will sign a deal shortly after.

Paul Finebaum Believes Kyle Whittingham is the Right Fit
On a recent episode of Get Up on ESPN, Paul Finebaum was asked about Whittingham and the possibility of joining the Wolverines. Finebaum stated that, in his opinion, the 66-year-old is a significant hire for the program at this time.
Finebaum outlined Whittingham’s winning record, 177-88 in 21 years, as an example of what he brings to the table. In addition to that, Whittingham is also known for building a culture within the program, something that the Wolverines need right now.
“You talk about culture, what program in America needs somebody who is strong in culture than the University of Michigan. So I think more than anything else, he brings respect back to a program that has lost almost all of it,” Finebaum said.
Hiring Whittingham right now will be in the program’s best interest. Not only do they need a stable head coach, but the program also needs to worry about the upcoming transfer portal window starting January 2nd.
If they don’t have a long-term coach in the program, players and staff members might start looking elsewhere for better opportunities.
